What is Domain Name Backordering? Watch Out For This One!

Domain names are the most popular real estate on the Internet. It's no surprise that services like Domain Name Backordering are available to the public. Can someone backorder your domain? guess again...

What is a domain name Backordering?

It is a service that allows anyone on the Internet to reserve a domain name when it goes on sale! Seems harmless, right? guess again...

Every business on the internet orders this service for popular website URLs! What if I accidentally forgot to change my domain name? Let's say you're on vacation and don't check your email to renew your domain name. In this case, another company on the other side of the world sees that your domain name is about to go up for sale, reverse-orders your domain name, waits and sees what you do. You are back from a very long vacation. What happens? Now someone else owns your domain name because you failed to keep your net real estate up to date!

If you don't have a CIRA-protected Canadian domain name, or if your domain name or business name is not trademarked, you're "really" out of luck. Right now, it could take months to prove in court that you forgot to update your website address.

Do you want to allow this service?

This is a very interesting question. Some will say yes because there are thousands of websites that will not be updated in the next month. On the other hand, some of these websites are completely wrong. I think this is the problem. Don't make this mistake and renew your domain name for at least 5 years. Google seems to be trying to find out which websites can stay online through their "WHOIS database" and register domain names for more than a year at a time.

Again, should I be able to backorder the domain? I'm against it! As with patents, domain names can be contested for up to one year, as long as the domain name is not transferred to another company or individual. This reduces domain name theft and "takeovers" from companies that have forgotten important responsibilities.

Your website address is the most important product on the internet. It is as important as your company name. It's about bringing your offline business online. People know you by your domain name. Potential customers may visit your site later.

Don't want another company in your place?

Be careful when giving domain name access information to anyone outside of your trusted circle.
